Going to roll the “Dice” here in the 18th round…

    SP Daisuke Matsuzaka

    See what I did there?
Prior to 2009, he was 33-15 with a 3.72 ERA. Last year’s ineffectiveness looks to be due to a leg injury he suffered in the WBC and then withheld from the Sox training staff. Add to that his last 4 starts (3-1 with a 2.22 ERA) and one can expect a bounceback season in 2010.

Chris … insert drum rim shot here … ba-bum-bum.

I could go a number of ways to close out most of the positions that I have left to fill, but, when it comes to catcher, I can only see one or two options left that don’t make my skin crawl. Plus, as many as eight backstops could get drafted before the draft comes back to me. I don’t want to get stuck drafting stiffs like Kelly Shoppach or Carlos Ruiz. That would make the fact that I drafted Mauer in the 2nd a total waste.

As much as I hate to admit it, I have to go draft strategy, leave more talented players in the pool, reach down to the bottom of the barrel, and grab Ryan Doumit.

  3. Like the Dice pick Chris. I’m betting that we see a rebound this year and was hoping he was going to fall to me with the next pick.

    Andrew Bailey, RP OAK

According to my good friend Tim McLeod, Bailey is still available, so I’m going to take my chances. Unfortunately, I don’t have my draft sheet on my computer right now.

Bailey can provide big dividends if he can rack up some saves, and being as familiar with Devine as I am, I’m confident that he will either break down or slow down at some point and Bailey will get saves.

  5. Which is why it’s never a good idea to listen to Tim since he’s never right on anything. Ivar took Bailey in the 11th Round.

  6. OOPS! Sorry Kevin you said you were looking at SP? We were chatting on Facebook and I gave Kevin a slew of names still available and it just so happens Homer and Andrew share a common bond, namely that last name. My apologizes to all, especially Kevin, for the confusion.

    Mark Buehrle, SP CHW

I was going to say, I really got a steal with Bailey. Give me Mr. Perfect Game.

We’re gonna get this whole round done in one day. I can just feel it! :)

    Go, Tim, go!

  9. And for my next pick I’d like to choose Andrew Bailey? Just kidding Kevin and again sorry for that one. I have to fill in my Util slot with outfielder Cody Ross. 25 HR potential with 80+ RBI will go a long way in helping me in the power department. I was contemplating Ross with my last pick and am very happy he made it back to me.

  10. A fellow can dream, can’t he, Bob? I will be here all day, so I am ready to pick, twice if need be. My queue is intact so far this round, so there should be no problem with me making a selection in round 18 at least. Let’s crank it up to 11.

  11. Ervin Santana – At this point in the draft, why not? Two years ago he was a top 10 pitcher and he’s still young enough to make a comeback.

  12. Francisco Liriano:

Since SP value has gone to the extreme here with low risk high reward I was sitting on two guys, Ervin Santana and Francisco Liriano. With Erv gone it’s Liriano but I was taking him anyway. I usually only draft 4 SP unless a potential steal falls in my lap or I have to take a P with my final pick and I like a starter the best. My final three offensive positions are the ones I use the most when making daily transactions (2nd C, UT and 5th OF) so no need to rush those when I can get a guy like Liriano who is doing nice things in winter ball.

  13. This late in the draft is a good time to take a shot, and being he is just a few years removed from a 200+ K season, Ervin Santana is a solid risk/reward here. Last year was rough for him, but he could be in line for a bounce back year.

  14. Justin Duchscherer, SP, OAK

Assuming he is once again healthy, he should help keep my ERA & WHIP in line with what I target as acceptable levels to compete. I usually look for someone to provide higher Ks, but his K/BB ratio should be close to 2.8, which is also acceptable if not superior. I consider Duke a fine SP4 for my squad. Now, so long as no one takes my next pick, I’ll be in great shape heading into the very end of the draft.

  15. I think I might take your pick Ivar…

  16. Todd Helton, 1B, COL

Time to secure the CI position, and looking to boost my team BA at the same time. Helton is steady, reliable, and predictable. If he produces like last season, I’d be just fine with that.

  17. Brett:
That would be expected, but I can still hope, can’t I?

  18. I have to take a starting pitcher at some point, so at this point in the draft I’ll chase skills and upside and take Red Sox righty Clay Buchholz. Although he’s not guaranteed of a rotation spot to start the season, his strong finish last season (2.87 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 2.9 K/BB in 37.2 IP in September) suggests he should have the inside track. And his minor league stats (2.73 ERA and 187 K’s in 181.1 IP in Triple-A) indicate to a high-upside talent who could become a #2 or #3 in fantasy terms by the end of this season.

  19. Year One can be brutal to young hitters sometimes. But Year Two, after they figure things out, can reap great rewards. I’m going to gamble on the potential of Colby Rasmus and hope for 20 HR, 75 RBI and 10 SB with the potential to do much, much more.

  20. Copy whatever Todd said about Rasmus in the first few sentences and add the potential for 30 HR, albeit with no steals.. Insert name________ Kyle “shooting” Blanks.

Onwards to round 19 we go and Ben Sheets. Billy Beane trades for someone or signs someone and I am all in. 99% chance he ends up on Boston, Yankees, St. Louis or another contender for the final two months.
