Last round I was debating between Kazmir and Oswalt. I went with Kazmir for two reasons: age and Oswalt’s back issues. After taking Kazmir this morning, I was all set to not take another SP.
I could go closer here but there is just nothing exciting out there… well, Lidge is exciting; but just not in a good-for-your-fantasy-team way.
There is an OF that has been sitting out there forever, but I already have four (maybe five if I decide to go with Cuddyer at OF). There was no other hitter that really inspired me.
Sooooooo… hello, Mr. Oswalt.
The 32 year old had his worst season ever in 2009. He posted an ERA on the wrong side of 4 and battled a nagging back injury for a good chunk of the season. Add in the fact that his spring training was thrown out of whack because of the World Baseball Classis and 2009 was the perfect storm of ineffectiveness.
If you believe in the Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) stat then Oswalt’s 3.76 score indicates that he experienced some bad luck in 2009. The FIP “tells” you what a pitcher’s ERA might have been regardless of the defense behind him.
Combined with Hamels, Shields & Kazmir – I really like my rotation.

I see no reason not to like 175 Ks, a 3.50 to 3.75 ERA, with a 1.25-ish WHIP from my 4th starter. He’ll, maybe, have a chance at 15 Wins? K/9 rate has hovered just under 8.0 for the last two years. K/BB rate is strong at ~2.5. He hasn’t been tremendously over-worked (~ 200 IPs in ‘08 – ‘09). The last two years, he’s been a SOLID guy … Ryan Dempster. I thought about going OF, but, as I struggled with this pick over night, SP just felt like the right way to go.

And with my next pick I’ll take Jose Offerman, interim manager of the Licey Tigers of the Dominican Winter League
Posted by Kevin Orris on January 18, 2010 at 2:48 PM
Tim Hudson, SP ATL
To my knowledge, he’s still available, and as a Braves fan, I cannot wait any longer. We haven’t seen him throw too many games yet since coming off of surgery, however, he was one of the best pitchers of the decade. It’s worth taking a gamble at this stage.

Kevin, far as I can tell Hudson is still available for your pick. I believe he’s worth the gamble. Roll the dice.

I think it’s just about time to find me a catcher and Kurt Suzuki should fit the bill. He’s at the right age to show some growth and is coming off a solid 14-88 season in 09. 15-20 homers with 80-90 RBI and a 270′ish BA will do just fine in 2010.
Posted by Jason Sarney on January 18, 2010 at 7:26 PM
With not many closers left, I’ll take Chad Qualls. He had 24 saves last year before missing the last month. With Haren, Webb and Jackson, he should have another shot at 30 saves in 2010.

Jorge Posada:
Was hoping Kurt Suzuki was still around and in hindsight I might have been better served taking him instead of Burnett, but Posada being available is pretty exciting. His value goes up if the Yankee LF situation stays status quo because they will find many more DH at bats for him. if Damon comes back or a player the Yankees need to hide some at DH he goes a tick down. With all that said he only played 111 games last year and produced 22-81-.285 I expect 25-90-.280 with a shot at more if healthy.

I see the 7&7 is being used again this year Phenom guys brett and jason. I know its early in the mock season but it seems like lots of drafters are holding off on pitching. has that thrown a monkey wrench in your strategy? for years I have gone into each draft with a loose plan of 7 hitters and 3 pitchers( not in any order) in the first ten rounds and play it by ear after that…

I am going to be in court this morning and this afternoon. If I get a break in between sessions, I’ll try to post a pick. Otherwise, I probably won’t have time until this evening to look over my projections and select. Please bear with me. Sorry to hold up the draft, but even with the national holiday yesterday, my schedule this week is hectic. I hate when real life intrudes on fantasy sports.

Can’t you ask the judge for a recess?
Posted by Ivar Anderson on January 19, 2010 at 9:07 AM
Yeah, but I don’t think she’ll be very keen.

A mock Fantasy baseball draft isnt important enough? Jeez, what is this world coming to.
Posted by Brett Greenfield on January 19, 2010 at 10:33 AM
unacceptable Ivar, really… just kidding
Posted by Ivar Anderson on January 19, 2010 at 11:56 AM
Garrett Jones, 1B/OF, PIT
I normally don’t like taking more than one player from a potentially mediocre team (OK, not potentially, just mediocre), but I like Jones as my CI pick. I figure him to have the ability to provide my team with 25 HR, and another 12-15 SB, with a .270 BA. I would like a higher average, but I see him as a risk/reward pick that could provide good upside power production, although just acceptable stats everywhere else. Based on my projections so far, he seems to be the best choice if I want a CI here, and I do.
Back to court.

Great pick Ivar. I was looking long and hard at Jones hoping to nab him in a couple of rounds. I like what he showed last year.
Posted by Brett Greenfield on January 19, 2010 at 4:58 PM
Will Garrett Jones be the next Joey Votto or the next Chris Davis?
Posted by Chris Mulligan on January 19, 2010 at 11:38 PM
David Price, SP, TB
When you look at Price’s stats from last year, they are actually pretty good for a guy in his first full season. But, expectations were so high for Price that those stats were disappoingting for some. I expect him to take a step in his progression this year. If Price can pitch 180 innings, he can get around 170 K, and likely an ERA around 3.70. The Rays should also be an improved team, that is if they can get better production from their offensive players and bullpen. I like getting Price in this spot considering how high his ceiling is.

I gambled that one of the three Chicago pitchers taken since my last pick — Floyd, Danks or Dempster — would fall to me here, but all I have to show for taking that chance is Alex Rios, with other good OF’s still on the board. Oh well… in a 12-team mixed league I’m not going to sweat SP’s too much. Instead I’ll console myself with Orioles closer Michael (don’t call me “Mike”) Gonzalez, who in my opinion is the best closer left on the board. Although health is a concern, he was dominant last season for the Braves, with 90 K’s in 74.1 IP and a solid 1.20 WHIP. He combines with Broxton and Valverde to give me a three-headed bullpen monster that combined last season for a ridiculous 11.5 K/9 and 3.1 K/BB.

I am now the charter member of the “I Hate Chris Mulligan Club.” I was really wanting Price in this spot. I’ll drown my sorrows with one Neftali Feliz. I think he can put up fantastic numbers. The arm is there, I’m just hoping he can keep it under control.
Posted by Brett Greenfield on January 20, 2010 at 8:19 AM
Jonathan Sanchez – After his no-hitter, he really turned it on. He struck out over a batter per inning and held an ERA in the mid 3.00’s. If he can carry that momentum over into this season, he’s got the ability to be a fantasy ace. Not many left at this point in the draft.
Posted by Mike Siano on January 20, 2010 at 3:19 PM
totally agree with Brett, I am very sad he didn’t make it back to me, but glad to know I wasn’t only one digging his skills. I think he may end up the best arm of this round. If it gets to me soon I won’t be able to pick until this evening FYI.
Posted by Chris Mulligan on January 20, 2010 at 10:17 PM
Brett, you wouldn’t be the only member. That group is growing every day! I like the Feliz pick a lot too. That guy looks scary good.
